History:

Little is known about the Kuno family's earlier years. For instance, the whereabouts of the mother of the family are unknown; I don't recall her ever even being discussed. We can ascertain that Kuno's father, the Principal of Furinkan High School, had a tendency to take off on his own; he is absent until well into the series, when he returns from a loooong trip to Hawaii. There's no real sign of a bond between father and children, either, unless the Principal appeals to Kuno's melodramatic "family loyalty" bone.

Prior to the series, Kuno fancied himself as the most skilled, most popular student at Furinkan (I don't get the feeling that has changed); although most students didn't seem to hold him in such high esteem as he did himself, Kuno regardless had control over much of the school simply through his will and his skill with the bokken. Well-read and skilled in quoting rather pointless poetry, Kuno declared himself to be the "Rising Star of the High School Fencing world", and spent time giving himself fancy nicknames like "Shooting Star" and "Blue Thunder" (the latter, he stuck with).

Like most of the other male students at Furinkan, Kuno took a liking to Akane Tendo, but found wooing her to be quite difficult. Understanding her competitive nature, and mistakenly assuming that women ALWAYS want to be pursued and are ALWAYS playing hard to get, he issued a speech to Akane's other suitors that in order to date her, they first must defeat her in combat. Knowing Akane's martial arts skills to be quite impressive, Kuno was therefore secure in the knowledge that no one would manage the task except himself. But even Kuno couldn't bring himself to defeat Akane in combat (or maybe he just wasn't quite good enough, though it's been implied it was the former), so each day brought a confrontation, poetry, and roses, but no actual dates to speak of... yet, anyway...
