Personality: There are several words to describe Kuno, and some require politer versions before being printed here, but one stands out as being the most apt: obsessive. Kuno is capable of setting his sights on one specific thing, and ignoring everything else entirely. If he believes something, he ignores all evidence to the contrary, at times even seeming not to hear objections. He believes in the truth of his own heart, and follows it wherever it may lead him; and he will not be dissuaded, even if his actions seem to cause harm to his goal. The case in point, of course, is his deep infatuation with both Akane and girl-type Ranma (the "pig-tailed girl", as Kuno continues to call her despite learning in an early episode that she shares Ranma's name); no amount of protests can convince him that both of these girls do not return his feelings, and no amount of violence can deter him from holding them in his arms... Additionally, no amount of pressure to choose between them can actually lessen the equal hold both girls have on him. Kuno is equally obsessed with breaking Ranma Saotome's hold on Akane and the Pig-tailed Girl, which he feels he can only do by completely trouncing Ranma - a feat that is increasingly beyond him as the series goes on, except on the random occasions that Kuno gets help from a magical artifact (and this happens surprisingly often). As I mentioned, though, there are many other ways to describe Kuno. He is articulate, able to quote lengthy passages of poetry at any given time (Shakespeare, in the dub; he's amazingly well-versed in it), and loves using archaic language whenever he feels the moment is dramatic enough. Kuno is also emotional, and strongly romantic at heart, suggesting that he has read a few too many samurai epics and believes wholeheartedly in all of them. He's very chivalrous (albeit in a rather twisted way), and will intervene whenever he sees one or more girls about to fight; he is also a closet pervert, though it's not a secret about the school that Kuno will hit on any good-looking girl that meets his standards (and that is most of them). Nabiki Tendo seems to fall outside of his radar, although she is able to wring money out of him with astounding ease - and this mercenarial attitude may be precisely WHY she continues to escape his interest. Kuno's most amusing (well, debatably, anyway) trait is also the one on which he is most ambivalent, and that is his stance on honour. As a would-be samurai, Kuno places great stock in appearing honourable and, as mentioned, chivalrous; more than any other character in the series, he expresses disgust at the idea of defeating an opponent dishonourably, like by attacking when he is down, or getting him from the back. That is to say, he expresses disgust, but also is more willing to fight that way than nearly any other character. Kuno is a master of rationalization ("it's not dishonourable to attack his secret weaknesses OPENLY!") and will happily use whatever information, magic, or devious opportunity is at hand, as long as he can convince himself that it's perfectly okay. Although Kuno begins his role in the series as a semi-serious adversary, he quite rapidly degenerates into a joke opponent, nothing for Ranma or anyone else to worry about; his fighting skills fail to develop as much as most of the other martial artists in Nerima, but he, regardless, continues to give Ranma some good fights when he finds a gimmick to help him beat his nemesis. More often, however, he is somehow tricking or bespelling the Pig-tailed Girl into dating him, and marvelling at her innocence and dainty nature... All this despite the fact that he has, essentially, seen Ranma transform in front of him. Blue Thunder of Denial, it seems. |
