Personality: Nabiki is very smart, very focused, and has a very dry sense of humour. She can easily be viewed as rather heartless, and in some interpretations downright evil, but there are no real indications that she's definitely anything except somewhat ruthless. Nabiki is, simply put, not afraid to manipulate people to get what she wants. This can take the form of blackmail, coy seduction, or out-and-out lying. She seems to take a certain pleasure in all three. Nabiki runs other "businesses" on the side, including money-lending, on which she charges quite a lot of interest, and photography - of whatever subject she knows her patsy is interested in. Once she has gotten what she wants out of her subjects, she generally just tosses them aside. Nabiki keeps a cool demeanor, for the most part. She rarely gets worked up over anything, good or bad; she tends to view most situations with a cool detachment, and often has a good deadpan reaction to the events going on around her. As mentioned in her "history", Nabiki has developed an excellent ability to read people; she comes off as pretty unflappable due to the fact that she can tell almost unerringly when she is being lied to, when someone is trying to scam her or someone else, and when someone is weakening under pressure. Actually, Nabiki probably has the best understanding of the human mind of anyone in the series - not that she puts it to much use, aside from the occasional manipulation of the innocents. *G* Nabiki is not above respecting someone else, but it takes a LOT, and she generally appears unimpressed with most of the people around her. In the earlier episodes of the series, Akane makes comments to suggest that Nabiki is a bit boy-crazy, and Nabiki's own comments support this possibility; she looks forward to Ranma getting there, and hopes he's "cute". However, as the series progresses, Nabiki shows no real interest in dating, outside of using guys to get a ritzy date out of them without having to pay a cent. In fact, she's considered the least romantic of anyone in the series. It's possible that, living with Ranma, Nabiki has given up any idealized romanticized version of guys and just decided to focus on making herself happy. ;) She does like to get cute with Ranma, though it always has a mocking, belittling tone underlying it; she can turn around and directly make fun of him at any time, though she doesn't seem to actually dislike him. This kind of behaviour has led some people to think Nabiki may secretly be in love with Ranma, though many think it's more likely that Nabiki gets a kick out of watching Ranma freak out by thinking she might love him. Nabiki has also inherited the Tendo family stubbornness, which manifests itself in her insistence on not giving up the lifestyle she wants to live, even though it's not within her family's means to live it. Overall, Nabiki is something of a question mark: what she really thinks or feels about anyone is left a mystery, and will stay that way. |
