Personality: Soun is a flurry of emotion. Often seen weeping with drama, he also enjoys a hearty laugh and has a temper to rival Akane's. On any given day one can see him go through any combination of these emotions, plus more; sometimes you really can't predict what, exactly, will set him off. Upon meeting Ranma and finding "him" a girl, Soun faints; but upon finding out the even stranger truth Soun laughs and dismisses the entire affair. His temper doesn't usually flair up unless the subject is related to who Ranma is going to marry, at which point he becomes a vengeful father - although truthfully, the anger seems more related to his wish to carry on the dojo than to any attempt to protect Akane from a broken heart, since Ranma can technically marry any of the Tendo girls he chooses. Although he is a teacher of Anything Goes Martial Arts, he is rarely seen fighting, which can lead one to believe that this man who lives by the martial artists' honour code and dresses each day in a gi is not actually much of a fighter. He is called upon to battle menaces in the neighbourhood with decent regularity, and generally foists the job off onto Ranma, though he's fairly good at making sure he is seen in the area so that his image of "Guardian Warrior" can be maintained. Of course this is known to backfire at times, since most of Ranma's battles cause quite a lot of destruction. Soun is, for all his problems, a loving father. He certainly has made that more of his life than he has actual martial arts. Where Genma has tried to pattern himself on stern, regal father figures of old, Soun has allowed himself to be permissive and approachable, and thus has avoided having to do most of the disciplining in his family. Loving he may be, but he is not much of a figurehead in his family, and he seems to be more content to let his daughters follow their own paths than to lay a path before them. He knows, and tries to follow, the most honourable actions in life; but unfortunately Soun is just something of a weakling and - unlike Genma, who embraces the easy way when it's presented - Soun feels shame for taking the easy ways but can't seem to break free of them once he's on them. |
